Whispering Spirits tells the story of Justin Veatch, an exceptionally talented musician/singer/songwriter who died from an accidental drug overdose in 2008 as he was beginning his senior year at Yorktown High School. The film follows Justin’s family as they grapple with their devastating loss and come to reconnect with him and reach thousands of others through the music he left behind. Music from the CD Permagrin: The Music of Justin Veatch, originally released by Polyvinyl Records, is featured in the film as well as original music from Justin that was never released. Two years in the making, the film is a collaboration of two Westchester native filmmakers, Sean Gallagher (Director and Editor) and Justin Drobinski (Director of Photography). Executive producer Stephen Apkon has awarded the film a grant through his media company, Reconsider, so Whispering Spirits can be shared with other non profit organizations without charge.
In 2009 the Veatch family created the not-for-profit Justin Veatch Fund which awards annual scholarships to talented musical teens and creates programs providing opportunities for them to collaborate with and be challenged by a network of like-minded peers and professionals. Jeffrey Veatch, Justin’s father, is the creator of A Message from Justin, a 40-minute multi-media program that he has presented to more than 23-thousand young people in New York, Connecticut and New Jersey.
