The Justin Veatch Fund began awarding $1,000 music scholarships in 2009 and to date has awarded 29 of them. This June it will present at least six more to graduating high school seniors at area high schools including one honoring the late Al Capellini of Yorktown.
Proceeds from "Music for a Winter's Night," a dinner/dance to be held at Putnam County Golf Course in Mahopac on January 12th will benefit upcoming scholarships. The evening's program will feature the music of the Class Action Band and former scholarship recipients. Tickets are on sale now at Eventbrite.
The evening program will also honor Tricy Cushner with a community service award. Cushner joined the executive board of Alliance for Safe Kids in Yorktown in 2006 and volunteered as President & CEO of that organization for 12 years where she now serves as Board President. Cushner also serves at President of YOUnited, Inc. which serves non-profits in Yorktown and is the scholarship chair for Yorktown Lions Club.
In addition to awarding annual music scholarships, The Justin Veatch Fund provides mentoring for teen musicians and creates programs to prevent teen drug abuse. The Fund was created following the accidental drug overdose death of Justin Veatch, a musically talented Yorktown High School Senior, in 2008. Jeffrey Veatch, Justin's father, has presented his multimedia talk "A Message from Justin" to thousands of students in the greater New York region.
